Hasegawa

348 tb

From all the possible choices, I still think that Hasegawa's 348 is the best kit to build this car, even though it is far from perfect. And this is not only because it is a full engine kit with great photoetched details. Most of the kit parts, including body, are molded in white plastic which makes them so much easier to paint red or yellow. Lower part of the body is molded together with the chassis, and this is especially convenient when you want to paint lower body in black. Kit has a very detailed engine, and separate engine lid (no hinges) to display the powerplant once finished. Interior is nicely detailed, with separate door panels, dashboard, and lots of other little details. Seats have no seat backs though. Most engine and exhaust parts are molded in light gray plastic. Chassis and suspension are very detailed, with many separate parts. Brakes look small, but have great detail. Clear parts are all separate and very thin. Decals are nicely printed, but white is a bit yellowed, and there are quite a bit of clear film around decals. Finally, there is a small fret with photoetched parts that includes all the screens, badges, emblems and scripts for the car. Instruction sheet is very clear and provides relatively correct color guide. There are few fit problems though, especially with rear wheel arches, they require lots of trimming to sit correctly. Brittle plastic, and many pin marks that require some filling and sanding. Chrome parts (rims and mirror faces) were a little dull and scratched in my kit. Overall, you really can't beat this kit for details. It is long out of production, but still available on eBay. I believe that version with white box is more rare than the later box (on the left). Recently re-issued.

Fujimi

348 tb

Fujimi 348tb/ts kits are one of many 1/24 kits of this model on the market. Body proportions are a bit off, but overall shape is there. The kit is curbside, and there are no opening features of any kind. Side door ducts are separate parts and need to be glued inside the body. Rims and mirror faces are the only chrome parts in the kit, plating is not very good in my kit, some of the parts are lightly scratched. Tires are made from soft rubber-like material, with Dunlop markings on the sidewall and good looking thread.  Interior is a tub, with good detail engraving on the central tunnel, with separate door panels and good panel detail on them. Seats have no seat backs, bit come with separate headrests. Dashboard is two-piece part with separate parts for steering column, wheel, handbrake and a shifter. Chassis plate has lower part of the engine molded in, and separate multi-piece suspension in the back and front. Rotor and caliper details look good, even though a bit simplified. Front wheels are steer-able via steering rack mechanism, rear wheels have a solid metal axle. Clear parts tree has separate pieces for the windshield, side and rear windows, and fog lights and taillights. Separately bagged decals are yellowed in my kit, and have way too much clear film around the design. Instructions are easy to follow, but provide only basic painting guide. Original kit with this box art is getting hard to find, but Fujimi re-issued the kit with different box art (in 348ts form, below), and recently reissued the kit again (and again?) with box art shown in the right column, and they are freely available. Prices for original kit a only slightly lower than the reissues.

Fujimi

348 tb Blackstar

Kit is absolutely identical to the original 348tb kit (reviewed above), but molded in black plastic, has different box art and instructions, and "Blackstar" designation. Kit is relatively rare, but since it is identical to the red version, it is more valuable as a collectors' piece rather than builders' kit. Available on eBay from time to time. Prices are usually slightly higher than original 348tb kit.

I have never seen this kit, but if it exist, I suspect that this is another re-pack of the 348tb kit in different box. Fujimi is really famous for tricks like that. If you have any info about the kit, please email me.

Hasegawa

348 ts

Kit is absolutely identical to the 348tb kit (reviewed above), but has different box art and instructions, and removable "targa" roof panel. Kit is out of production since late 80's and getting hard to find. Version with the box art on the right is less common, and usually costs higher. Available on eBay from time to time. Recently re-issued.

Fujimi

348 ts

Fujimi's 348ts kit is basically a modified re-issue of the tb kit. It has a separate "targa" roof (present on the runners in tb kit as well), and slightly different body, instruction sheet and decals. Kit shares all positive and negative things with the tb kit. The kit is available for next to nothing on eBay. In addition (to my surprise) Fujimi recently reissued the kit (different boxart), and new release is also available from many online retailers.

F355 Berlinetta/GTS/Spider - F355 Challenge - F355 Competizione - 355 F1 Berlinetta/GTS/Spider

Fujimi

F355 Berlinetta

Fujimi 355 is the only kit of this beautiful car on the market. It is based loosely on their 348tb kit, and body proportions are a bit off, but overall shape is there. The kit is curbside, and there are no opening features of any kind. Like mirrors, part of the engine lid, and rear panel, side vents are separate parts, and present some challenge to blend them seamlessly with the body. Rims and mirror faces are the only chrome parts in the kit (rims are too shiny for my taste), tires are nice low profile Pirelli P Zero with good looking thread. Since the kit is based on 348tb kit, early kits were supplied with 348 interior as well! Only later the kit was reworked and produced with true 355 interior. My kit comes with updated 355 interior. It is a tub, with relatively soft engraving on the central tunnel, and absolutely no detail on the door panels. Seats have no seat backs, dashboard is one piece with separate parts for the instruments, steering column and the wheel. Chassis plate has lower part of the engine molded in, and separate suspension in the back and front. Rotor and caliper detail look good, even though a bit simplified. Front wheels are pose-able via steering rack mechanism, rear wheels have a solid metal axle. Clear parts tree is absolutely identical to the 348 tree, and even has the markings for Ferrari 348. There are small addition to the tree with 355-specific taillights and front blinkers. Separately bagged decals are nicely printed and provide decals for both Berlinetta and GTS. Instructions are easy to follow and provide basic painting guide. Original kit is getting harder to find, but Fujimi recently reissued the kit with box art shown in the right column. Prices for original kit a only slightly higher than the reissue. There are rumors that it was a limited reissue, and not a lot of kits were produced.

F355 Berlinetta (Yellow Version)

The kit is absolutely identical to the red version, only molded in yellow plastic. Instructions also carry designation "yellow" and kit has a different box art. To the best of my knowledge, kit was only made with correct 355 interior. Yellow version is extremely rare, and commands premium prices. Since the kit is identical to the recently reissued red version, it is more valuable as a collectors' piece rather than builders' kit. I've only seen few of them on eBay in the last 5 or so years.

F355 GTS

Another modified reissue of the original 355 Berlinetta kit, this time in the GTS form. I think both Berlinetta and GTS kits were made at the same time, since some of the boxes contain 348 interior parts, just like early Berlinetta kits. I have both 348 and 355 interior kits. The kit is identical to the Berlinetta kit, except for the GTS roof. The kit is out of production for some time now, and considered a relatively rare kit. Prices are slightly higher than for Berlinetta kits, but lower than for Yellow or Challenge versions.

F355 Spider

Yet another variation of the original Berlinetta kit. It took Fujimi a while to see the potential of the original tool and convert it to the Spider. The kit was released in late 2004, and basically identical to the Berlinetta with some minor modifications to the body (side vents are still separate!), re-worked rear end, spider buttresses, and a convertible roof boot. No roof parts provided in the kit. It could have been so much better, but what we got is just another half-baked modified re-issue, aimed to get few fast bucks. Kit is currently available from many retailers.

F355 Challenge

Modified re-issue of the original 355 Berlinetta kit with a basic set of Challenge decals, a new set of Challenge rims, and few other parts to make a Challenge car conversion. It is nowhere complete, but its a good start. The kit is very rare, almost as rare as the yellow version, and is getting very hard to find. Prices usually very high due to rarity and high demand. Kit is out of production and can be found only on auction sites, etc. Hopefully Fujimi will re-issue the kit like they did with the original 355 Berlinetta.
