250 GT TdF

Finely crafted curbside resin kit by an obscure Japanese manufacturer - I know of only one other kit they made (166 MM). Very nice and clean kit, rare 14-louver version, vertical front bumperettes. Some photoetch, white metal, vacuuform clear parts, rubber tires, simple instructions.

Italeri

250 GT SWB California Spyder

Another Italeri kit based on their 250GT platform. Chassis and engine are almost identical to SWB kit (and include parts for GTO engine as well), and interior is mostly for the GTO (no door panels and seats for the California Spyder provided), with the exception of new dashboard and instrument cluster. Overall body proportions are slightly off, but not noticeable. Same tool is used for the most of the kit, resulting in sink holes and pin marks at the same places in many parts. Moldings require some cleanup, but parts fit is good for the most part. Chrome is somewhat heavy, as well as wire wheels and tires (same Dunlop Racing as on GTO and SWB kits). Decals are nice, and instructions are clear and give correct color reference. With some aftermarket additions (or scratchbuilding) to update interior and to correct minor inaccuracies, the kit could be built into a very nice looking replica. Given its the only plastic kit of a California Spyder, the kit is very popular and getting hard to find, especially original Italeri releases. Out of production.

Gunze Sangyo

250 GT SWB

Gunze Sangyo SWB kit shares several modified major components (chassis, suspension, interior) with their famous 250 GTO kit. Plastic body is very nicely done, although to me the shape seems slightly inaccurate. Its a curbside kit, but loads of white metal and photoetched details compensate for the lack of the engine. Wheels are the same nice photoetched wires as in GTO kit, and regrettably, tires are also the same no-name, awful-looking pieces or vinyl. White metal parts are nicely done, but some require major cleanup, although most of the parts fit well. Due to the fact that glass parts are thick, most of them are slightly cloudy. Photoetched parts are made from thick sheet metal, and it is hard to remove tiny parts and file off tabs. Kit has detailed interior and chassis, as well as nicely decorated body. Instructions are somewhat misguiding, and there are no decals provided in the kit. Overall its a very good kit, and with addition of Replicas and Miniatures Co. of Maryland engine kit, it could be built into amazing replica. The model kit is out of production, and availability is very limited. Mint, sealed, and complete examples command very high prices.

Italeri

250 GT SWB

When Italeri created tooling for 250-series Ferrari chassis, they decided to make several kits of 250GT Ferraris, and one of them was an SWB. Kit shares several major components (chassis and most of the interior and engine) with other Italeri 250GT offerings (California Spyder, GTO), but the body and other exterior parts are unique to this kit. Even the parts that are shared are (mostly) updated to represent correct version of the car. Moldings are not the best, but for the most part accurate, and even though they require some cleanup, they fit together well. There are a lot of sink holes and pin marks on kit's parts, and tires and wheels are slightly on a heavy side, but the kit builds into a very nice-looking model. Kit includes good decals, nicely done instructions with good color reference. Out of production, and getting hard to find due to recent high demand.

ESCI

250 GT SWB

One of first plastic kits of SWB. Body proportions are off, window trim is not accurate. Moldings are crude, and require a lot of cleanup. Some parts (such as grille) are slightly incorrect shape and a little on a heavy side. Detailing is average. Full engine (hood is molded shut though) and suspension details, nice interior detail and chassis frame. Tires are awful, as well as the 2-piece wire wheels. Decals are usually nice (depends on issue year and batch), instructions are good and clear. Could be built into a nice shelf model, although not exactly accurate. Will require some modifications, scratch building, and new wheel/tire combo to look correct. Out of production, and becoming rare, especially mint copies.

The No 7 start number relates to its entry into the Tourist Trophy race at Goodwood, which it won with Moss driving. Aurora

250 GT Berlinetta (250 GTO)

One of the early kits of the GTO, 1/25 scale. This is very detailed kit, with nicely done engine and chassis, very detailed interior, opening doors, hood and trunk, finely engraved parts, and good wheels. But there is a major problem - body shape is absolutely wrong! Rear end is slightly different shape, but that is not the worst part - front end looks like it is from a different car! Everything - grille opening, fog lights, headlights, brake cooling ducts, hood and fenders are just plain wrong! The kit box doesn't actually says its a GTO, but later Monogram re-packed the kit under 250 GTO name. Kit could be used for parts, since it has excellent mechanicals and engine, but since they are in 1/25 scale - they are too small to use in any of other GTO kits. Kit has nice instructions and ok decals (most of them are old to use anyway). Out of production, original issue kits are quite expensive, but worth only as a collectors items.

Italeri

250 GTO

If you are looking for a full detail GTO kit, and can't find Gunze 250 GTO with engine kit, this is the next best thing to get. Italeri's GTO is an excellent and very detailed kit, but unfortunately, not flawless. Kit shares several major parts with other 250-series kits in Italeri's lineup (SWB, Cal Spyder), which include same heavy looking wheels and tires. Body proportions are quite accurate, but body requires some mold lines and flash cleanup. Many parts of the kit are plagued with pin marks and sink holes (typical for Italeri kits of the period though), and will benefit from careful filling and sanding. Kit has detailed engine and transmission that attach to excellent chassis frame with full suspension. Parts fit is good. Decals are very crisp and nicely registered, but chrome parts are slightly on a heavy side. Instruction drawings are misguiding at times, but good overall. Kit is long out of production, and due to the fact that it is a base for several GTO-related transkits, is getting hard to find.

Gunze Sangyo

250 GTO

This is one of the three variations of the excellent Gunze kit. This version is less detailed, representing 250 GTO road car. The kit is curbside, has a lot of nicely done (but in need of major cleanup) white metal parts, and several frets with excellent (although made from thick metal sheet) photoetched parts and a set of headlight surrounds. Wheels are nicely done photoetched wires, but tires are very disappointing no-name skinnies with no sidewall or thread detail. Kit shares some parts with Gunze's SWB kit (chassis and interior to name a few), and these parts require minor corrections to build a GTO. Kit's body is one of the most accurate GTO bodies I've seen in plastic (except rear wheel arches). Instructions made in typical Gunze style, and there are no decals in the kit. If you want to build a full engine kit, look for Gunze full detail version of this kit, or get an excellent Replicas and Miniature of Maryland engine transkit - with some modifications it fits inside the model very nicely. The model kit is out of production, and availability is very limited. Good, and complete examples command very high prices.

Gunze Sangyo

250 GTO Competition

This kit is the second version of Gunze's GTO (see above), and basically identical to their previous GTO kit, save for some minor details. Instruction sheet is vague and provides very basic (and for the most part inaccurate) color reference. Decals provided for three different racing versions (hence the competition designation) of the car for 1962 and 1963. If you can live without the engine - this kit offers lots of detail for the fraction of the cost. It builds into excellent shelf model of great GTO. The model kit is out of production, and availability is very limited. Good, and complete examples command very high prices.

250 GTO Series II

Model Factory Hiro

250 GTO Series II

Based on famous and rare Climax kit, this re-issue is not an exact copy, but rather a copy with slight modifications: new wire wheels (Hiro), new decals, slightly re-worked photoetch and turned parts, and updated and modified instructions - but it is still the same great Climax master with stunning level of accuracy and detail. And for a little over $200.

Climax

250 GTO Series II

This is my opinion the best, the most correct, and the most detailed kit of the series II GTO - finely cast resin, full detail, loads of nicely cast white metal parts, carefully etched photoetched parts, turned steel details, wires, clear parts, incredible tires with correct thread pattern, perfect and thin decals. Excellent packaging and very detailed instructions and decal placement guide. Near perfect kit.

"Ready to assemble plastic car model" - says on the box. The picture on the box also looks like 64 GTO (as well as the body inside the box, according to a few pictures I have), but the box says 250 GTB? Model looks to be motorized, with racing decal numbers 30 and 20.

K&B

250 GTO Series II

Essentially a slot-car, but with decently proportioned plastic body, that can be used (and is used) in many series I to series II conversions by modelers. The kit contains all necessary parts to build that car as a slot model, but can be easily converted to fit Italeri/Testors, or Gunze 250 GTO series I kits. Few different box designs exist, complete and new kits are very rare and command premium prices. It is possible to find a built up example to use as a body donor too. Mini Exotics made a re-pop of the body with slight modifications in resin, and it is currently available from R&D Unique.

Academy

250 LM

Not sure who is the manufacturer of original tool - Academy, Minicraft or Sunny, but Academy version is easiest to find. All three kits are absolutely identical, suggesting that same kits were just packed by three different manufacturers. The kit is curbside, with simplified chassis (some tubular chassis detail and engine underside are molded in) and non-existent suspension. Exhausts are separate pieces. Body is very well done, but again, simplified (molded-in mesh for the grille and engine lid, brake cooling ducts, etc). Decals are provided for three different versions of the car, but they are poorly registered and very thick. Headlight surrounds supplied as photoetched parts, but their size is slightly off. Chrome plating is good, although several chrome-plated parts are out of scale (too big). Wheels are junk, and tires are poor. The best part of the kit is interior, with all details finely reproduced, and good parts fit throughout the entire assembly. Instruction sheet is very nice with correct color guide. It is a very good "base" kit, which lends itself to many possible modifications and improvements. Since there are not many 250LM kits on the market this is the best choice if you want this model in your collection. Out of production, but still available at Hobby Link Japan.

ESCI

250 LM

The kit is a limited edition "Easy Car" series. The words "oversimplified" and "toy-like" describe this kit best. Although kit has opening doors, engine lid, engine detail, and some chassis and suspension detail, all parts (there are about 50 parts in this kit) are very crude and heavy. In addition, body and several other parts molded in plastic that contains a lot of rubber, and they have really rubber feel to it, in addition to being very soft. Moldings have a lot of mold lines and pin marks, seats are molded into the interior, engine is 4-5 parts assembly, including carburetors, belts, transmission and all engine bay accessories. Chassis attaches to the body with the screws, and kit has plastic tires and awful simulation of wire wheels. All body openings are molded closed, and surface detail is very poor. Decals are very good though, and instruction sheet has nice assembly drawing, but no paining guide. Since this kit was a limited edition, very few were made, and current ridiculously high prices are dictated mostly by collectors - this kit has no real value for a builder. Out of production.

The kit is also limited edition "Easy Car" series, and its absolutely identical to the previous release, except this one has additional lights rack in front of the car, and different decal sheet with markings for Tour de France. The kit is even more rare than regular 250LM, and I only saw this kit for sale once on Ebay for last 5-6 years. Out of production.

250 LM #21 LM68, David Piper

Very nice curbside resin kit based on Academy kit, represents David Piper's 68 LM car with its "welded up" front end, and bright green color scheme. Clean castings, very nice photoetch set, good decals and accurate wheels. Not a lot of detail, but should build up into a very nice shelf model. I believe its a little bit smaller than 1/24.
